2019 Community Dance Piece - What to Expect

Thank you to everyone who came out to our first Community Gathering and Information Session last week. We are excited to get started with our first rehearsal of Phase One on Monday May 6th!

In the event that you were unable to attend, we've put together some key information for you to help answer questions you may have on what to expect.

Code of Conduct
Simcoe Contemporary Dancers has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment and discrimination. Any person found to be harassing or discriminating based on any point of difference including but to limited to race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, or disability will be asked to leave the project.

When we are outside in the park you must always be with a buddy. If you need to leave the group (to use the restroom etc.) please inform your rehearsal facilitator and go with your buddy or a designated SCD company member.

For any rehearsals or performances involving youth/children their guardian is responsible for informing SCD in advance as to who is picking the participant up or how they are permitted to travel home.

During the first rehearsal of Phase One, Phase Two and Phase Three, we will work together to develop a list of community agreements around the question: “What do we need from one another to feel supported in this project?”

Where are the rehearsals?
Rehearsals will be held at Lampman Lane Community Centre and Park.

We will always meet inside the community centre at the beginning of rehearsal.
Part of our time each rehearsal, weather permitting, will take place outside in the park as the first four performances of the piece will be danced outside.

Rehearsals involving youth/children will always end inside the community centre to assist with safe dismissal.

What should I bring?
Please make sure to bring sunscreen, a water bottle, a nut-free snack, and bug repellant.

At the first rehearsal will we be collecting participation and image waivers from all participants.
These will be emailed in advance of your first rehearsal and hard copies will also be available onsite.

What should I wear?
Please wear comfortable clothes you can move in. Light layers are best for summer rehearsals to have options for sun and bug protection.

Please wear running shoes! We will be dancing in the park and barefoot is not a safe option. Shoes that tie snuggly are ideal. For the portion of rehearsal indoors running shoes are also encouraged.

What will rehearsal be like?
During the first rehearsal of Phase One, Phase Two and Phase Three, we will work together to develop a list of community agreements around the question: “What do we need from one another to feel supported in this project?”

We will begin moving with a gentle group warm up. From there, your rehearsal facilitator will lead the group through a series of activities that encourage developing our own movement. We will use guiding words, feelings, images, and ideas, to start building a section of the dance. Members of SCD will also be in rehearsal to support and help shape the process.

We may not use music very much at first (especially because park by-laws discourage the use of amplified sound) but we will use music more as the piece starts to take shape.

Every rehearsal will have a short 10-15min break around halfway mark and light refreshments will be provided.

What kind of dance piece will we be making?
The piece will draw on the people in the process. If you have a special talent or skill you’d like to incorporate in the dance please let us know on your registration form, or let us know during the first rehearsal. Dancers in Phase One and Phase Two will be working to build sections of the dance, while participants who begin in Phase Three will be helping build and create transitions between sections as well as be part of larger group sections.
