New Chapter - by Sarah Lochhead

This season has been a whirlwind of activity.  It's hard to believe that it is July already!

As I sit here at my desk organizing files, archiving and planning for this next seasons, it's amazing to think of how far we've come in such a short time.

One of the major highlights of this past season was seeing Aliyah Gaines' work "Pressure" hit the stage at the Guelph Contemporary Dance Festival Youth Moves Series.  Just last summer it was a seed of an idea explored as part of our My Moves Choreographic Intensive. It's hard to believe it started from improvisations about the letters of she and Olivia Lyle's names and about objects in the room. It truly developed into a powerful and moving piece about social pressures and was exquisitely danced by our company apprentices, Haley Coulter, James Lintag and Regan McQuoid.

And now a new chapter ...

We are officially a not-for-profit organization with a Board of Directors.

We are working to clarify our mandate and build a strategic plan that will ensure that professional contemporary dance has a vital role to play in our local arts scene.

It's a whole new layer of understanding and learning that is enabling me to look at the big picture of what our organization has achieved and what we hope to accomplish.

In 2009 when I posted our first open audition call, I hoped - but never imagined that we'd be here so soon.  SCD is more than a company - it's a family.  When I moved to Barrie it felt like any other city, but now with a place to create and a stellar group of dancers to train and dance with -  it feels like home.
