In process: renewed solo work (Sarah Lochhead)

On Saturday SCD will be showing a reworking of the piece formerly known as Pourquoi Choisir? or Why Choose?.   We started working on the initial solo over a year ago and it has been performed a couple of times (see snippets here) to a wide selection of music.

I knew the piece was not done  - it just wasn't what I wanted it to be or in some respects what it wanted to become.  So, this summer I took the piece with me to Peggy Baker's summer intensive. Guided by the explorations she offered out to us and with the support of my classmates the piece began to evolve in what felt like the "right" direction.

Sometimes it feels like the dance has a life of it's own and my job as a choreographer is not to dictate but to listen.

These are a few images that have resonated with me during this reworking process:

Dorothea Tanning's A Little Night Music  connects to the aesthetic of the piece and in some ways the movers relationship to space.

The vintage movie poster for Attack of the 50 ft. Woman also connects to the aesthetic of the piece ... Carly and I played with the idea of being a giant as a way to explore our relationship to levels.

And more recently in our process I began to see feel that the piece somehow reminded me of time lapse photography.

I'd love to hear your feedback on what you see in the work and what images it brings to mind for you.

Come check it out!
